They have numerous other expenses to cover as well including hardware, travel costs, future hires for work needed to improve Godot in specific areas and more. To give an example of where some funding goes, they current have 10 either part or full time contracted to work on Godot directly which is costing $40,000 per month. Previously they used Patreon, PayPal donations and one-time grants but they're hoping to be more self-sufficient if they can get enough people to come to them directly. Now, everything around Godot has grown significantly but now they're at a level of spending greater than what they're pulling in. Part of the reason they're announcing this now is that when Godot was smaller it was gathering more funds than it could use as they couldn't find developers to hire. With Godot Engine moving over to being supported by the Godot Foundation directly, they've begun pushing for people to support their efforts via their new funding platform inspired by Blender.
